Part 1: Presentation by Raphaël Buchard, IP / IT & Data Protection lawyer
1. Can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Raphaël Buchard, I'm 35 and I'm a lawyer specialised personal data protection.
Together with François Lemarié, I've just founded Dipeeo, a company that aims to make GDPR accessible to everyone, not just large companies.
Part 2: Description of Raphaël Buchard's career, IP / IT & Data Protection lawyer
2. What was your career path before becoming CEO of Dipeeo?
I first worked at the European Commission, then I worked at Bensoussan, the historic data protection law firm with Eric Barbry, whom I later accompanied to create the IP / IT & Data Protection department at Racine in 2018. A great experience!
After all these years of experience, I felt that one cycle had come to an end and a new one had to begin. So I decided to launch Dipeeo with François.
.
3. How long have you been practicing as a lawyer?
I've been in the business for 6 years.
4. How did you become CEO and co-founder?
By creating it! I simply decided to become my own boss, and that changes a lot of things!
5. How did you get started?
I started my career in some of the big Parisian business law firms, so as to get my bearings and be prepared to launch my own structure. I think I made the right choice because I was very well trained and learned a lot.
Part 3: Description of the Dipeeo startup
6. Tell us about your startup Dipeeo?
First of all, it should be noted that Dipeeo is not a law firm. It is a "legaltech" company providing DPO consulting services that combine human expertise and new technologies to best meet the needs of client.
Put simply, GDPR is like a chartered accountant. On the one hand, you have the option of using software, but without expertise, you'll have no guarantee of doing things right, and on the other, traditional GDPR players offering services at high prices. With Dipeeo, we're somewhere in between. We automate the essentials of GDPR to focus on the essentials, namely DPO support, while offering affordable rates.
7. What is your role within your Dipeeo startup?
My partner, François Lemarié, handles financial and commercial matters, as well as Partnerships. For my part, I also handle commercial matters (via webinars, writing articles, etc.) and Partnerships above all I am responsible for producing and validating GDPR documents.
8. Are you specialised a particular field?
I trained as a "generalist" in new technologies because I specialised in intellectual property, new technologies and personal data protection.
Today, I've noticed that there are training courses specializing solely in data protection, which I think is a mistake, because to fully grasp the client's needs, you need to have a more global, macro vision.
9. What does a typical day look like?
A typical day is busy! It includes sales, webinars, clients meetings, calls from clients need advice, managing our team, etc. It's a lot of work, but it's exciting!
10. In your opinion, what are the positive aspects of this job?
When I was working at a law firm, most of my work consisted of working on cases, which was starting to bore me a little, even though I enjoyed my job. What I love now is having to manage lots of different things at the same time (e.g sales, marketing, production, R&D, etc.), and I'm learning something new every day!
11. What are the main difficulties in your job?
The main risks are taking our knowledge for granted. We may be convinced of something because we've done it several times, only to discover that a new subtlety has just been pulled out of the hat by the legislator, the CNIL (National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties) or other players. You always have to question yourself!
The other risk is always wanting to please the client the expense of their real needs, so as not to upset them. At times, it is in your interest to contradict them, but this is not always easy.
12. What are the main difficulties you encounter in promoting yourself and developing your customer base?
Developing the network and the customer base involves a daily investment and a great deal of rigor. It's both exciting and time-consuming! The main difficulties for me have been adapting to the clients ' discourse and vocabulary, so as to be less legal and more punchy. It's a tough job for trained lawyers!
Part 4: Qualities & skills required as CEO of Dipeeo
13. What qualities are required to work as CEO of a startup like Dipeeo?
The main qualities required to be a good DPO are, first and foremost, a genuine awareness of the digital sector and new technologies. If you don't understand anything, you're in trouble!
Next, you need to be able to see the big picture, considering the client their interests as a whole. The GDPR a text that involves a lot of interpretation. It's exciting because there's so much to do, but it also requires a pragmatic mindset.
In my opinion, many DPOs are too strict in their analysis of the text, which makes life impossible for clients and becomes totally counter-productive. But that's just my opinion (laughs).
14. What are the key skills in your business?
The key skills are, as I said earlier, knowing new technology law as a whole. Skills in intellectual property as well as consumer and labor law are also important, as GDPR is a cross-sectoral law.
You also need DPO certification, which is what I have.
15. How would you describe yourself in a professional context?
I used to describe myself as a lawyer specialised in intellectual property, new technologies and data protection. Now, I describe myself as...an entrepreneur.
Part 5: Outlook for the Dipeeo startup
16. What are the future prospects for Dipeeo?
We want to develop Dipeeo to become a must-have of course!
17. Any final words?
The GDPR, contrary to what many think, is not a constraint but an opportunity! For example, respecting the GDPR means respecting your clients, members, members as well as your employees. Respecting the GDPR also means realizing that democracy also lives thanks to data protection.
With Dipeeo, we don't want to play on fear and the risk of sanctions, but rather on ethics and the virtuous aspect of GDPR. And so far, it's working!
