No data protection impact assessment (DPIA)
The parent company of Facebook and Instagram will have to dig deep into its pockets. Meta will have to pay a fine of €405 million for failing to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation.
The Irish Data Protection Commission has criticized the social network Instagram for the way it handles its users' personal data, particularly that of younger users.
Meta, in turn, stated that the investigation concerns old settings that were updated over a year ago, and many features have been released since then. The safety of teenagers is taken into consideration in such a way that every person under the age of 18 automatically has a private account. This means that only people who follow a teenager can see what they post and send them messages.
"This investigation focused on old settings that we updated over a year ago, and we have since released many new features to help keep teens safe and their information private," said the Meta spokesperson.
This is the heaviest penalty imposed on the tech giant since the fine it had to pay for WhatsApp last year for its opaque terms of use.
